In recent years, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has made efforts in the application of big data on rural revitalization, adding new momentum to its poverty alleviation measures.

With the deep integration of big data and modern agriculture, the comprehensive benefits and competitiveness of the city's agriculture industry have been significantly improved.

Since 2018, Yanshan Cherry Farmer Professional Cooperative in Wudang district has started to use a QR code to improve the market competitiveness of its agricultural products.

The specific QR code, which is printed on packaging boxes, can provide consumers reliable information, such as the production place, data, and quality inspection report of the agricultural product, through the Guiyang Agricultural Product Safety Traceability System.

"Our output of cherries is expected to reach more than 5,000 kilograms this year. With the QR code, consumers can buy and eat more safely," said Zuo Fuxing, head of the cooperative.

Li Tao, a technician of the city's agriculture and rural affairs bureau, said that there are more than 100 high-quality fruit plantation enterprises and bases registered on the system.

Data shows that the traceable area of the system has exceeded 100,000 mu (6,666.67 hectares), accounting for 16.46 percent of the city's total fruit plantation area.

Big data technology has also promoted the development of rural e-commerce, marking an innovation in its poverty alleviation efforts.

As the first Taobao village in Guizhou, Libei village in Xifeng county has made agricultural products in mountainous regions popular and ecological goods through the e-commerce platform, selling them across the country and to overseas markets.

"Last year, the number of professional e-commerce workers in our village exceeded 40 and the sales of agricultural products through e-commerce platforms reached 20 million yuan ($2.83 million), which raised the income of villagers," said Gong Xingchun, village Party chief of Libei.

Since the three year development plan on Guiyang's rural e-commerce was announced in August 2015, e-commerce infrastructure in rural areas has been greatly improved.

To date, the city has built eight county-level rural e-commerce operation centers and more than 600 rural e-commerce service stations. In addition, the rural express service points on the township level have achieved full coverage.

Agricultural products exports are the key to increasing the income of rural residents. Guiyang has actively explored the online market to help farmers in mountainous areas sell agricultural products to cities.

Guiyang-based Guizhou E-commerce Cloud Operation Co Ltd has helped farmers in Anlong county, which is located in Qianxinan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, promote the sales of bananas through the JD e-commerce platform during the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic.

As of April 10, more than 165,000 kilograms of bananas have been sold inside and outside the province, benefiting more than 60 impoverished households in Anlong.

Officials said that the Guiyang railway port will be completed this year. A growing number of local commodities can be directly declared through the port to international markets with lower export costs. The port will also attract more foreign export-oriented enterprises to bring more employment opportunities to the city.
